Mountain Man - The Historian's View

The Mountain Man campout in early February was a very successful campout, but there were a lot of behind the scenes work starting as far back as December! That was when we were in the basic planning portion, but the idea grew and developed rapidly. In January, the team went and actually hand-built every station, from log hoist to tomahawks.

When the actually campout happened, some scouts from the troop came decked out in period dress. Personally, I believe that the campout was a huge success and hope that we do more things like this. The guys had a great time and there are things that we can also improve to make next years campout even better!

Dolphin Research Center

Last summer, I had the opportunity to go to Florida Sea Base with Team 448.  While at Sea Base, I was able to learn many new things about the Florida Keys mangroves and coral reefs.  I also made the acquaintances of our first mate and captains.  They were very knowledgeable about the surrounding area.

One of my most memorable memories from Sea Base was our trip to the Dolphin Research Center.  We saw all of the dolphins jumping around and having fun with the trainers.  There was even a dolphin that had been attacked by a shark and a very fast iguana named Lana.  When we went to the gift shop, I purchased a postcard.  I wrote a heartwarming letter to my parents, of course it arrived after I got back.  Unfortunately, the week passed quickly and it was time to leave.  The whole week including the trips there and back was fantastic and memorable!

Kayak Trip on Lady Bird Lake

A quick post to show photos from the team's kayak trip on Lady Bird Lake. They went from Festival Beach to Bird Island and hung out for a while, including officially accepting Michael Martinez onto the team since he missed the draft.

Mountain Man!!!

This weekend Team 448 went out to Three Rivers, Texas at the Odom family ranch and hosted a Mountain Man campout.  Scouts participated in activities such as the caber toss, hawk throw, archery, tow-man saw, log hoist and group knot.

Following that we had two mountain men re-enactors come and teach us about what mountain men actually were .  We finished off with a great BBQ dinner and dutch oven competition.
Overall it was a fun camp out and we all thank the Odom family.

Team 448 providing leadership to Troop 448

Here is a note from Mr. McDonald about the Team providing a program for Troop 448 during the February 21st meeting:

I want to give a shout-out to JB for doing a great job with the knot skills breakouts at last week's meeting. He had everything ready, made sure that materials would be on side, and even had handouts to help with the knots.

Very well done.
